We investigated whether canopy tree seedlings have different growth and mortality rates on different microsites in montane rain forests of the western South Island, New Zealand. Seedling relative height growth rates of three species, Podocarpus hallii, Quintinia acutifolia, and Weinmannia racemosa, were very low (mean = 0.037 cm·cm–1·year–1). Seedling growth rates were higher on logs than on the ground at high light levels, but the probability of seedling death on logs was also greater at high light levels. Seedling foliar N and P concentrations were generally not different between logs and the ground. Growth rates and foliar N concentrations of Quintinia and Weinmannia were greater for seedlings on tree fern trunks than for seedlings on the ground. Mortality rates did not differ between seedlings on tree fern trunks and seedlings on the ground. Seedling densities of Quintinia and Weinmannia were greater on logs and tree ferns than on the ground. Podocarpus densities were not different between logs and the ground, and this species did not occur on tree ferns. Quintinia and Weinmannia benefit from establishment on elevated microsites but this is not clearly the case for Podocarpus. Tree regeneration niches for such slow-growing species can only be determined through long-term studies. Phosphorus limits Eucalyptus grandis seedling growth in an unburnt rain forest soil

Although rain forest is characterized as pyrophobic, pyrophilic giant eucalypts grow as rain forest emergents in both temperate and tropical Australia. In temperate Australia, such eucalypts depend on extensive, infrequent fires to produce conditions suitable for seedling growth. Little is known, however, about constraints on seedlings of tropical giant eucalypts. We tested whether seedlings of...

Community Ecology

Seed and seedling predation may differentially affect competitively superior tree species to increase the relative recruitment success of poor competitors and contribute to the coexistence of tree species. We examined the effect of seed and seedling predation on the seedling recruitment of three tree species, Acer rubrum (red maple), Liriodendron tulipifera (yellow poplar), and Quercus rubra (n...

Conspecific density dependence and community structure: Insights from 11 years of monitoring in an old‐growth temperate forest in Northeast China

Forest community structure may be influenced by seedling density dependence, however, the effect is loosely coupled with population dynamics and diversity in the short term. In the long term the strength of conspecific density dependence may fluctuate over time because of seedling abundance, yet few long-term studies exist. Based on 11 years of seedling census data and tree census data from a 2...

Drivers of seedling survival in a temperate forest and their relative importance at three stages of succession

Negative density dependence (NDD) and niche partitioning have been perceived as important mechanisms for the maintenance of species diversity. However, little is known about their relative contributions to seedling survival. We examined the effects of biotic and abiotic neighborhoods and the variations of biotic neighborhoods among species using survival data for 7503 seedlings belonging to 22 ...

Spatial contagiousness of canopy disturbance in tropical rain forest: an individual-tree-based test.

Spatial contagiousness of canopy dynamics-the tendency of canopy disturbances to occur nearby existing canopy openings due to an elevated risk of tree fall around gaps-has been demonstrated in many temperate-zone forests, but only inferentially for tropical forests. Hypothesized mechanisms increasing the risk of tree fall around tropical forest gaps are (1) increased tree exposure to wind aroun...
